Added by editor- I want to remind everyone that regardless of who you think is responsible for this incident the bottom line is EVERYONE is responsible for their own dogs and their dogs actions. That means if your dog chomps on another dog YOU are responsible for that dogs vet bills. That's the rule in all Chicago Park District Dog Parks, and by using the Park, you agree to that rule. Being unkind and rude does not help the situation.
Also, because of the huge amount spam we get, all post must be approved for publishing, so please be patient.

The Dog Beach is open year round, during all regular Chicago Park District hours.
A sure sign summer is just around the corner is The Anti-Cruelty Society's big yearly fund raiser.
Bark in the Park is a 5K/3.1 mile walk—with or without your dog to raise funds and awareness for The Anti-Cruelty Society. The event takes place at Montrose Beach in the big grassy area in front of the big boathouse, from 8 am till noon. The 5k walk starts at 9 am, and usually passes in front of the Dog Beach. Last year the event was attended by over 3,500 people and 3,000 dogs and raised over 250K for Anti -Cruelty. If you'd like to participate in the walk or the other activities, check out the official Bark in the Park web site.
If you plan on visiting the Dog Beach on Saturday, keep in mind access to the beach may be limited during the walk, and you may have to park further away than usual. There will be lots of new visitors to the Dog beach, so please help out by pointing out bag dispensers if needed.
Every year Mondog participates in Friends of the Parks Earth Day Clean Up as our first scheduled clean up of the year. This years clean up is on Saturday, April 16 2011, 9 a.m. – Noon.
Please join us for a morning of cleaning, shoveling, and maintience as we prepare for the summer season. Bring a shovel, rake, or bucket and scooper and help clean off the ramp, rock walls, or dig out the gated beach entrance. Or just come on down and help clean up trash and icky things. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. We will also be taking donations, a $50 donation gets you a Mondog t-shirt!
The beach is open during clean ups, and as always, dogs are welcome.
MonDog has a monthly beach clean up the third Saturday of the month from spring until fall, 9 am until 11.
We try to cleaning up the Dog Beach, boat launch, and surrounding areas, and taking care of some maintenance issues. The more volunteers we have, the more we can accomplish. Hope to see you there.
Response to the survey has been good so far. There's a good variety of people responding, and there's been a lot of interesting and insightful comments. It's interesting to see that over 80% of respondents say they purchased DFA tags last year, but when you look around the beach, maybe 25% of people have tags. So it looks like we have a lot more people to reach with our survey:)

About the cafe-
"The café would undoubtedly earn someone a nice profit, but I don't
think it will improve the dog beach atmosphere. In fact, food nearby
will make the beach worse. The presence of the café might encourage
people (with or without dogs in tow) to bring food to the adjacent dog
beach. There are enough people doing this already (although kudos to
Mondog and the Park District for posting rules telling people not to
do this). Many dogs become excited, if not downright aggressive, in
the presence of food"

"No, but it seemed every week there would be an aggressive dog whose
owner was not paying attention to their dog. But as a whole I was
always pleased with my experiences."

my dogs toys while their owners don't pay attention or try to

"No. We stay away from the large crowds. This just comes with people
not knowing their dog is aggressive, which unfortunately can sometimes

can't handle their dogs, and that responsibility falls on them to be
good dog owners."

aggressive and my dog got upset back. I find this happening more and
more and summers are a nightmare! Making owners responsible for their
pets behavior would be huge blessing. But I still LOVE this beach and

"I would love to see some more regulations put in place. I think it
has got out of control especially on the weekends. Just because your
dogs are free to roam does not mean the owners are free to take a nap
on the beach. Owners need to stay with their dogs. I avoid the beach
on the weekends because if the regular beach is crowded then people
move to the dog beach and set up camp. This increases the population
on the dog beach and makes it more difficult for our dogs to run
around. These people usually have food with them and it is hard to
keep dogs away. I would love to see something put in place where it
is DOG BEACH ONLY! There are plenty of beaches in the city that these
people can go too."
"Dog beach needs work on the fences after all the snow and ice. Like
everything, the beach is becoming so popular it is having issues.
Having enforcement of the rules is always a good thing. I would buy a
tag if it was offered at the MonDog cafe and I would even pay a
premium as part of a MonDog owners package. Such as a contribution to
MonDog or if it were part of the fee to be a MonDog member. Just a
convenience thing. I do not have one because I do not use a vet in the
city. "

"With more people using the beach, you are going to have more
incidents. The biggest issue is people who come to the beach to
socialize and not interact with their dogs. As a result, their dogs
are not being supervised and are more prone to get into trouble. I
also think it would be wise to prohibit intact males from using the
beach."

Seasoned beach regulars know the lake is constantly in flux. The Dog Beach is a natural area subject to storms and snow and the tides. Every year the shore line changes, the sand bar moves, and the beach gets more sand. Typically we gain more space as the water lever lowers and more sand is washed ashore. Our fences have been extended every year for the last 5 years. 2010 was different. Overall the shoreline receded and our south fence actually ran into the lake, or as close to it as it has ever been.
Many beach newbies and people with wandering dogs request that the fence be extended into the lake. Mondog, and the Park District, have always opposed this. It would collect garbage, inhibit water flow, potentially create a hazard for dogs and swimmers, and mostly, it would require constant maintenance. That's where we're at now.
Ice, snow, and a big storm early in January trashed the fence. It's unfortunate, but it's going to happen if the fence is close to the shore line. There's not a lot we can do about it. Mondog only does minor repairs. Major repairs, like this damaged fence, are completed by the Park District's tradesmen. This repair has been reported and it will be repaired sometime in the future, when the weather is less volatile.
What advice would you give to first time beach users? What would you liked to have known on your first visits? Bring towels and prepare to get wet? Bring your own toys? There's a lot of big dogs at Montrose who trample little dogs? Don't leave valuables in you car? We're working on a new web page to give advice to new and infrequent users. Send us your comments and ideas and help teach our many new visitors the ways of the Beach.

Summer 2010 was the busiest that Montrose Dog Beach has been so far. We've grown from a small community of dedicated people to a destination spot for dog lovers from all over Chicago-land, as well as visitors and vacationers from all over the country. In fact the questions we're most often asked are "Where is the Dog Beach?" and "I'm visiting from out of town, what do I need to visit the Dog Beach?".
With all the additional new traffic come new challenges, as well as intensifying old ones. As Mondog looks forward to the upcoming summer season, we need your feedback to help us assess the last year, and look at improvements for the new year. Let us know what kind of beach user you are, what your issues are, and what, if anything, you'd like to see happen this year.
Please take a couple minutes and fill out our questionnaire. Survey will end on March 14th. The results will tabulated and posted on our web site shortly after. As always, no personal information will be used for nefarious purposes.
You may have heard there is a proposal in front of the Park District for a new Dog Beach Cafe. The Cafe would be located in the south-east corner of our parking lot in a "tasteful permanent structure" to be constructed by the Park District. The Cafe will be run by a private individual, just like other vendors in the Park. A percentage of the profits from the Cafe will go to the Park District, but will not necessarily benefit the Dog Beach directly. The effect of the Cafe on the number of parking spots in the lot is TBD. The ADA parking spots that will be displaced by the Cafe will most likely be relocated to the south-west corner of the parking lot where there is currently "unoficial" regualr parking spots.
The Cafe will be open from March to November and would sell coffee, pastries, sandwiches and snacks, dog treats, toys, etc. The vendor says he will provide picnic tables with a view of the lake, porta potties and hand sanitizer, and maybe even a doggy drinking fountain. The Vender states he is committed to keeping the Cafe area clean and ample trash and recycling containers will be provided. He is also offering to accept donations to Mondog, and to participate in our monthly clean ups and events.
